Ćele-kula (Turkish: Kelle kulesi, ie ’skull tower’) is literally that – a tower made of 952 skulls. Built in 1809, after the defeat of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire, with the aim of intimidating the rebels and preventing further unrest. Instead, the Ćele-kula becomes a symbol of resistance and freedom.
Although it is one of the most important monuments of Serbian culture and among the largest buildings made from human skulls, the first anthropological analysis was conducted only recently, in 2023. Join us on November 11th on a fascinating journey into the human remains, history, and legacy of one of Serbia’s most haunting monuments.
